In May of 2001, I arrived in St. Jean Pied du Port, ready to take my first steps on the Camino. I had already quit my corporate career a few weeks earlier, and embarked on a quest to understand my life and give it meaning. That quest had led me to Egypt, Greece, Italy... and finally found me in southern France ready to walk as a pilgrim, and not merely travel as a tourist. I was fit, but did not train for the Camino. I did not research or plan ahead, but had read Shirley MacLaine's account of her pilgrimage and was inspired by it. I would use the guide that I bought in St. Jean, and begin the journey of following my own inner arrows and guide, and not merely the outer ones. That journey of transformation from the outer to the inner would set the foundation for my next pilgrimage, from Rome to Jerusalem.
